Sweet Grass County is surrounded by the Crazy Mountains and the Absaroka Mountains on three sides and a prairie lies to the East. The Yellowstone River and the Boulder River flow through the county. The county seat of Big Timber was settled in the early 1800's and eventually became a large sheep ranching area. At one time Big Timber shipped more wool that any other community in the US. It is now a successful agricultural community. Population count in 2009 was 1740. Big Timber offers a variety of restaurants and clothing, gifts and sporting goods in shops that still have the look of by-gone days. It has a small private airport and a hospital and emergency room. It is located about 60 miles from Bozeman and 80 miles from Billings.
